Why Do Some Young People Try Drugs? Mission Sambhav | Prevention Added 31 October 2026. Clinical review pending. Learn why prevention is about relationships and support, not only warnings. Substance use does not have a single cause. Curiosity and peer influence can play a part, but so can stress, difficult relationships, social isolation, easy availability and the wish to feel accepted. Two young people facing similar pressures may make very different choices. This is why labelling a young person as “bad” or “weak” is neither fair nor helpful. Risk factors are not predictions A young person spending time with peers who use substances may face additional pressure. Feeling disconnected at school or having little adult support can also increase vulnerability. None of these experiences proves that someone will use drugs. Equally, substance use is not always visible through appearance, grades or behaviour. What can protect young people? A supportive home, trusted adults, meaningful friendships, opportunities to participate in school or community life, and skills for coping with stress can make a difference. Practical prevention involves more than listing the dangers of drugs; it helps young people navigate real situations. Three actions for a community 1. Create someone to talk to. Every school or youth group should identify trusted adults who can listen without humiliating or threatening students. 2. Practise decisions. Use real-life scenarios about being offered a substance, feeling excluded or dealing with stress. 3. Offer connections. Sports, creative activities, mentoring and volunteering can provide belonging; but should not be presented as a guaranteed cure. Remember: Prevention is a shared responsibility. Families, schools, peers, health workers and communities all have roles. If someone is already experiencing difficulty, offer help rather than turning a prevention conversation into an accusation.
