A conversation can be a beginning.
Small, everyday conversations that help a young person feel heard.
Make room to listen
Choose an unhurried moment. Ask how things have been and give them time to answer. Put your phone away and let them finish before you respond.
Stay curious
Try an open question: “What has been on your mind lately?” Reflect back what you understand. You do not have to agree with everything to take their feelings seriously.
Leave the door open
If they do not want to talk, let them know you are available another time. Connection also grows through ordinary, enjoyable moments together.
