What Happens at Your First Addiction-Care Appointment?

Understand what to expect when you first speak with a treatment professional.

Download text

Making an appointment can feel intimidating. You might worry about being judged, being forced into residential care or not knowing what to say. In a good service, the first meeting should focus on understanding your needs and helping you choose a safe plan.

What might a professional ask?

They may ask about your physical health, the substances you use, how they affect your life, your goals, sleep, mood, work and living circumstances. They may discuss medications or physical tests where medically appropriate. You can also raise concerns about privacy, cost and family involvement.

What decisions are made?

An assessment may lead to different options: outpatient appointments, psychological therapies, medication for certain conditions, supervised withdrawal treatment, residential care or a combination. Not everyone requires admission to a rehabilitation centre.

Questions worth bringing

  1. What are my treatment options and why are you recommending this one?
  2. Is withdrawal supervision needed in my situation?
  3. What is the likely cost, and what is included?
  4. How will my information be protected and who can access it?
  5. How will we review progress and plan support after treatment?

Bring someone if you want

A trusted family member or friend may accompany you if you choose and the service permits it. You should have a say in what personal information is shared, subject to applicable law and safety requirements.

Remember: An initial appointment is a step towards informed choices, not a promise that one particular treatment will solve everything. The quality of care and a continuing plan matter more than dramatic claims of instant recovery.
