When Might Substance Use Need Professional Help?
Recognise patterns that deserve a confidential professional conversation.
You do not have to wait for a crisis to ask for help. People seek support for many reasons: they may be worried about their own use, concerned about someone close to them or simply uncertain what is happening.
Possible reasons to seek an assessment
- You are finding it harder to control how often or how much you use.
- Substance use is affecting work, education, sleep, health or relationships.
- You continue despite consequences you would like to avoid.
- You feel physically unwell when reducing or stopping, or worry about withdrawal.
- You have tried to change but need more support than you currently have.
These are reasons to speak to a professional, not an online diagnosis. A qualified clinician can explore the full picture and discuss appropriate next steps.
How to start
You can tell a doctor: “I'm concerned about my use of alcohol or drugs and want to understand my options.” You do not need to arrive with a fixed decision about inpatient rehabilitation. An assessment can help determine what level of care is appropriate.
A note about withdrawal
Do not abruptly stop heavy, dependent alcohol use without medical advice. Withdrawal can be medically dangerous. Some other substance-related withdrawal situations also need clinical assessment. Never rely on an internet guide to plan detoxification.
Support available in India
The Government of India's national drug de-addiction and counselling helpline is 14446, which can provide guidance and referral information. You can also speak with a doctor or a suitable addiction-treatment service.
If someone is unconscious, having trouble breathing, having a seizure or is in immediate danger, call 112 for emergency assistance.
